Election victory tweet was the most retweeted tweet in India in 2014.

Twitter said that in a series of firsts, Modi is the first Prime Minister in the world to use Twitter Mirror and the first politician to make a video tweet.

Popular file sharing website RapidShare is shutting down next month

Rapidshare, one of the most popular file sharing websites has announced that it is shutting down next month. The company hasn’t share out the reason why it is closing the shutters, but it is likely because of the significant dip in its user base.

Launched in 2002, Rapid Share was one of the first one-click-file-hosting services on the internet. In the later years, it also became the most popular site in that category. Over the years, the site found itself in trouble with MPAA and other copyright-infringement regulators and right holders. The company also fought many legal battles with these organizations.

But in order to not get sued for increasing number of copyright-infringing materials many of its users were uploading, the service –under the pressure of Hollywood giants and others — announced that it will be removing all such content. In 2009, the company also struck a deal with Warner Bros as part of which it redirected users requesting and accessing unlicensed movies to a legal download store.

As the platform became hostile for sharing and hosting the copyright infringe content, users started to flock away to other platforms, and as a result, the user base of RapidShare dipped heavily. To manage the expenses, the company had fired 75 of its employees in 2013.

The company attempted to stay in the business by becoming a cloud storage service of the likes of Dropbox, Drive etc. But it was perhaps too late as it never received any substantial traction.

And while it managed to keep the site ticking and operational throughout 2014 without much fuzz, the company has reached its final phase. “Kindly note that RapidShare will stop the active service on March 31st, 2015. Extensions of STANDARD PLUS and PREMIUM will be possible until February 28th, 2015,” RapidShare writes on its homepage.

Company Notice

Kindly note that RapidShare will stop the active service on March 31st, 2015. Extensions of STANDARD PLUS and PREMIUM will be possible until February 28th, 2015.

“We strongly recommend all customers to secure their data. After March 31st, 2015 all accounts will no longer be accessible and will be deleted automatically.”

Microsoft released technical preview of Windows for Lumia smart phones

Microsoft released technical preview of Windows 10 for phones to public. The company is seeding out the update via its Windows Insider app to select handsets. To download the new technical preview, you’ll first have to sign up for the Windows Insider preview program.

Windows 10 for phones will support all Lumia handsets running Windows Phone 8 or above. For now, however, the software update is only compatible with selected Lumia handsets. The handsets that can snag the update are Lumia 630, Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 730, and Lumia 830.

The company is blaming something called “partition stitching” for the delay of the rollout to other handsets. The said feature allows the company to dynamically adjust the storage space hogged by the operating system, and some phones have “very tight OS partitions.”

Much like its desktop counterpart, Windows 10 for phones also doesn’t pack in all the features. For instance, Messaging on dual-SIM support handsets, search, message drafts, ability to share voice notes, Bi-Di language support, international assisted dialing, spam filter, reminders and quiet hours through Cortana and multiple attachments are missing fro the update. But Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore says the company will be “delivering new features and new devices…over the next few months.”

With Windows 10 for phones, Microsoft is trying to give its mobile operating system a major boost. Among other features, it brings support for universal apps. As a result, Windows 10 for phones has new photos, calendar, mail, music, camera and messaging apps that resemble their desktop counterpart.

Top features of Windows 10 Phones

Windows 10 on phones, that’s what Microsoft is calling the next version of its mobile operating system. It is the latest attempt by Microsoft to improve Windows Phone’s dwindling market share. At the event in Redmond earlier this week, the company announced several new features for Windows 10 on phones that it hopes will attract more people to use Windows-powered mobile handsets.

  • Universal Apps

  • Project Spartan

  • Office for Windows 10 on phones

  • Built-in Skype

  • Improved Action Center

First road-legal driverless car published in UK

Britain’s first driverless vehicle to run on the streets was officially published Wednesday at a government launch event. The prototype ‘LUTZ Pathfinder’ pod is an electric-powered two-seat car designed to work on sidewalks and pedestrianized areas at a maximum speed of 24kph.

The pods are being built by RDM Group, one of Britain’s fastest growing advanced engineering companies, and will be equipped with sensor and navigation technology provided by the University of Oxford’s Mobile Robotics Group. The pods will be tested on a route in Milton Keynes in summer. This will be the first time driverless vehicles will be used in Britain in an urban community setting.

”The projects we are now funding in Greenwich, Bristol, Milton Keynes and Coventry will help to ensure we are world leaders in this field and able to benefit from what is expected to be a 900 billion-pound ($1.37 trillion) industry by 2025,” Xinhua news agency quoted Britain’s Government Business Secretary Vince Cable as saying at Wednesday’s launch event.

“The UK is at the forefront of this emerging new technology and poised to become the leading supplier of autonomous vehicles and systems around the world,” said Steve Yianni, CEO of project leaders, The Transport Systems Catapult (TSC). The TSC is one of seven elite technology and innovation centres established and overseen by Britain’s innovation agency, Innovate UK. Based in Milton Keynes, TSC is a world class collaboration facility for innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers and business leaders. It is a partner in a $30-million consortium set up to create a full city demonstrator that will eventually see public trials with a fleet of around 40 driverless pods using pedestrianised areas.

Neil Fulton, programme director at TSC, stressed safety would be the “number one priority” during the trials, using devices such as electronic sensors and cameras and an emergency stop ability.

The First Ubuntu smartphone will Sale In Europe

It has been a long time since the project was announced, but the first Ubuntu-based smartphone will go on sale for just under €170 (around $195) in a flash sale across Europe.

Ubuntu actually announced BQ as one of the launch partners in February last year, but it seems the project delivery date slipped a bit into 2015, nonetheless, the terribly named BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition is finally come soon.

The exact date, time and URL of the online-only sale will be revealed via the BQ and Ubuntu Twitter and Facebook accounts, which is no doubt a good way to drive a following to those social channels.

Key specs of the device include :

  • 4.5-inch display
  • 1.3Ghz MediaTek quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB storage
  • dual-SIM slots and microSD support.

More important than any of that though is the concept of Ubuntu’s Scopes – the visually-rich panels it uses to display information to users. These are also customizable by handset makers and operators, thereby making the platform more attractive.

Apps built specifically for the OS will be required for the best experience, but the Ubuntu mobile platform does also support HTML5 apps as standard.
