What Is Meta Business Agent?
Meta has officially launched the Business Agent Platform on WhatsApp, allowing companies to build and deploy their own AI-powered agent. This agent can manage full customer conversations — from answering product queries to qualifying leads and even closing sales — entirely within WhatsApp chat.
Businesses aren't restricted to a single approach either. Meta Business Agent can work alongside third-party AI tools or human support agents, with the ability to hand off conversations seamlessly between them depending on complexity or customer need.
New WhatsApp Business Pricing Explained
Alongside the launch, Meta is restructuring how non-template messages are billed. These messages now fall into two categories: Service messages (the existing type) and Meta Business Agent messages (the new AI-driven type). Here's how pricing will roll out:
1. Meta Business Agent Pricing – Effective August 1, 2026
Meta will charge on a per-token basis, similar to how most AI providers price their models. The rate is a flat $2.00 USD per 1 million tokens, covering both AI processing and message delivery in a single charge. Since a typical message uses around 20,000–25,000 tokens, businesses can expect to pay roughly 4–5 cents per message. Billing will continue to be invoiced monthly.
2. Service Message Pricing – Effective October 1, 2026
Meta will resume charging for service messages on a per-message basis, matching the existing rates for utility and authentication messages in each market. A message qualifies as a "service message" only if it is not handled through Meta Business Agent. These can still only be sent within the 24-hour customer service window, which resets every time a customer sends a new message.
3. Utility Template Pricing – Effective October 1, 2026
Utility template messages sent within an open customer service window will also be billed per message starting this date. In short — starting October, any reply sent during an active conversation window (service, utility, or AI agent) will carry a cost.

Why This Matters for Businesses
This update signals a broader shift toward AI-driven, usage-based pricing across WhatsApp's Business Platform. Companies relying heavily on customer service messaging should review their current message volumes now, since the return of per-message charges in October could meaningfully affect monthly costs. Early adopters of Meta Business Agent may also benefit from more predictable, consolidated billing compared to running separate AI and messaging costs.
